KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Most superintendents of school districts in Kent County have signed on to a letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, urging her to allow winter contact sports to resume in the state.

Grand Rapids Public Schools' superintendent was not among the signees.

The letter says the districts are confident they can provide safe experiences for their athletes because of their partnerships with local health departments.

"We realize making a decision around high school athletics is tough and we stand ready and willing to partner with the governor and her team to provide safe and meaningful athletic opportunities for our students," Caledonia Community Schools said in a tweet Thursday.

Michigan House and Senate committees held hearings Thursday morning and heard from many community members who also want winter sports to resume.
