Welcome Back!: Fremont welcomes back students for the first day of class

FREMONT, Mi — The first day of school is a big moment — not just for students, but for parents, too.

At Pathfinder Elementary School in Fremont, educators are offering advice for moms and dads who may be struggling with the emotions that come with sending their children back to class — or to school for the very first time.

The message from staff: trust the process, and keep it positive.

"Send them on their way, be happy for them, excited for them," Pathfinder Elementary Principal Shelley Peets. "Know that they are in good hands. We are taking good care of them and they are having tons of fun meeting lots of new friends, and you will get to see them soon."

First Grade Teacher Nicole McCue also cautioned parents to be mindful of the language they use when saying goodbye.

"Let them know that they've got this, that they're gonna have a great time saying things like, Are you going to be OK without me? Are you going to be scared? If you say things like that, it makes them think that they might not be OK without you, that they might — they are going to get scared," Nicole told me. " So if you could just avoid things like that and be more positive, like you're gonna have a great day, it's gonna be an awesome day, you're gonna have so much fun, instead of the negative parts, asking if they're going to be OK without you, because then it just puts that negative idea in their head and then they think they have to worry and they don't."
