CALIFORNIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 3-year-old was shot when several children, all under 5, found a gun in a bedroom while the adults were making dinner.

The bullet hit the toddler in the area of the face and neck and was taken to a hospital in Angola, Ind., and then taken to a larger hospital in Fort Wayne. The child is expected to recover.

The incident took place at a rural home southeast of Coldwater in Branch County near the Michigan-Indiana border.

Michigan State Police handled the incident, and MSP issued a reminder that firearms in homes must be locked away in cabinets or gun safes.
