EDENVILLE, Mich. — The owner of two dams that collapsed in May and caused severe flooding in the Midland County area has filed for bankruptcy.

Boyce Hydro, owner of the Edenville and Sanford dams, filed bankruptcy paperwork July 31.

Heavy rains in May put more stress than normal on the dams, causing them to break and led to evacuations in the area.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy hired a senior environmental engineer to act as a third inspector in its Dam Safety Program.
