BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — A Cheboygan man died early Sunday morning after being struck by a truck.

The Mecosta County Sheriff's Office tells FOX 17 calls came in to 911 around 3:30 a.m. reporting a man "acting erratic" in the middle of US-131 north of exit 142. They arrived to find the body of 27-year-old Clyde Edward Hopkinson. Hopkinson was alone, wearing dark clothes, laying in the right lane.

Soon after, Isaac DeRuiter called 911 to report he had hit something in that area. Police interviewed the 18-year-old Caledonia man at a gas station he had stopped at in Oceola County and impounded his pickup truck for further investigation. They do not believe alcohol or drugs to be a factor in the crash on the part of the driver.

Police they are not sure why Hopkinson was walking in the highway. There was no sign of a vehicle belonging to him in the immediate area.

Mecosta County Sheriff's Deputies are asking anyone with information on Hopkinson's death to contact police at 231-592-0150 or at tips@mecostacounty.org.
