FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man is in the hospital, after he was shot in the leg during a gun malfunction.

The Mason County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to East Hoague Road in Free Soil Township Sunday morning on a call for an "accidental shooting."

Deputies and medical crews found 46-year-old Jason Eric Schenkel with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Investigators say Schenkel, along with family and friends, was holding target practice on private property, when one of the guns suffered a malfunction.

The person using that firearm was working to fix the problem, using the hood of a vehicle as a bench. Schenkel walked in front of the barrel when the gun discharged.

The 46-year-old was taken to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital, then transferred to Butterworth in Grand Rapids. He is expected to survive.

The Sheriff's Office says alcohol is not suspected as a factor in this shooting.
