HOLLAND, Mich. — During the unusual year of 2020, there were still some things we could depend on. One was dedicated men and women serving as police officers.

On Friday, the Holland Department of Public Safety announced the officer of the year for 2020: Sergeant Scott Weiss.

Spending all of his professional career with Holland Public Safety, Sgt. Weiss started as a police cadet in 1990 before being hired as an officer in 1993. In his 28 years behind the badge Sgt. Weiss served as a community police officer, field training officer, firearms instructor and was a member of the department Special Enforcement Team.

Sgt. Weiss currently serves as a patrol shift supervisor. He was nominated for being “an excellent ambassador for the HDPS, an outstanding supervisor, and a stellar, all-around cop," according to a release.

Chief Messer presented Sgt. Weiss with the award during a small ceremony that many of his fellow officers attended virtually.
