HOLLAND, Mich. — The Holland Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the area of Maple Avenue and Seventeenth Street Wednesday afternoon.

Heavy smoke was found billowing from the second floor upon arrival, according to the City of Holland, who say a person was believed to be trapped in that same area, adding that an unconscious male individual was found lying in the backyard. They tell us the latter received treatment immediately.

We’re told resources were diverted to search for trapped occupants on the second floor while other firefighters worked to put out the fire.

The City of Holland says no other individuals were found inside the building and that the male in the backyard was the only occupant who sustained injuries. They say he was taken to Holland Hospital; his condition is unknown at time of writing.

We’re told the cause of the fire is unknown and that both apartments suffered severe smoke and fire damage.

The fire is under investigation.
