FRUITPORT, MICH. — February 24, 2021, marks the start of a special season: ice cream season.

This year, the weather is perfect at 40 degrees. The last couple of years, the line has been just as long, even with below-freezing temperatures.

“It’s just fun. It’s fun to come back. It’s been a long winter, so it’s like a sign of spring,” Norm's Ice Cream manager Jezzie Breitwisch said.

Brietwisch is the manager at Norm's in Fruitport. She's been working there since she was 14 and 2021 marks her 14th ice cream season.

“It’s always a good turnout," Breitwisch said. "You never think people are going to come out, but they do.”

Larry Diederichsen, from Norton Shores, came prepared.

He and his wife bust out the cooler to take a taste of Norm's home.

A large is beyond enormous...so there is always plenty of leftovers.

“Well, this is the only place you can get chocolate lover’s dream," Diederichsen said. "You can’t buy it in the store. So that’s what we load up on."

It's a town tradition. With half-off ice cream on opening day, no one cares it's cold out.

Just don't forget to bring cash in order to pay for your summertime fix a little early.

“It’s just a Fruitport thing, I don’t know,” Breitwisch said.
