BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A 1-year-old girl is dead after a driver hit her and three others in a Battle Creek crosswalk.
Battle Creek police say the group was in the crosswalk at Capital and Burnham when the light turned green and a vehicle accelerated, hitting them.
At the intersection, a rubber ducky and other baby toys are zip-tied to a pole.
Two other girls, ages 9 and 5, were also hurt and taken to the hospital. A 30-year-old woman who was with them is in critical condition.
Robert Foust, a neighbor who lives near the intersection, said he heard the crash from his home.
"I heard the babies hollering and that. I came over and that…it was just terrible. I saw the baby and I almost busted up crying," Foust said.
"Had the baby in her hands, and when the car hit them, the baby was in the center, and the mother was face down," Foust said.
"The kids, were all in the cross walk when they got hit," Foust said.

The 54-year-old Battle Creek resident behind the wheel is said to be cooperating with authorities. Police say they do not believe alcohol or speed was involved in the crash.
