IONIA, Mich. — The Ionia Free Fair grounds were buried under piles of shirts, shoes, furniture and household items – all for a good cause.

The Lakeview MSP Post held a yard and bake sale to help one of their own.

Trooper Dane Van Ells was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and while he’s down in Houston, Texas getting treatment, his colleagues held the sale in Michigan with 100% of the proceeds going towards his medical expenses.

“We’re all here because we want to save Dane’s life and make him well again,” said Lt. Christian Clute of the Lakeview Post. “The treatment he is undergoing right now is an experimental treatment and it is not covered by his insurance.”

Trooper Van Ells is getting treated at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston. Through a tube in his chest, his father, Joe, says he’s getting IV treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“The amount of people that have come forward to help with the donations is unbelievable,” said Joe. “The support from the community is just outstanding.”
