GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Drivers on the West Side of Grand Rapids will have to get in the habit of using a detour to get onto eastbound I-196, as the only ramp they have will be closed through October.

The ramp from eastbound Lake Michigan Drive to eastbound I-196 will close at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, and will stay closed through October 31.

The closure is part of the project to rehabilitate every bridge on I-196 between US-131 and Market Avenue, and that includes the bridge that carries the eastbound ramp over the westbound lanes.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has not issued a recommended detour, but it appears the only option is to continue east on Lake Michigan Drive or Fulton Street and get access to eastbound I-196 from Lane Avenue or US-131 from Pearl Street at the east end of Lake Michigan Drive.
