Some parents say the policy is a welcome change. Tanisha Hassen has a student at Grand Rapids Innovation Central High School, she said after a summer filled with screen time she's glad her son will have some time away.
"My son is usually on the phone or a computer. So, you know, getting away from that in school, I think it's a good thing," Tanisha said.
Not everyone is fully at ease with the new restrictions. Cheryl Reed has grandchildren that attend Grand Rapids Public Schools, she said she understands the purpose of the policy but has concerns about her grandchild's safety.
"It's really tricky. I mean, you want them to study and you want them to pay attention and learn things, but yet you want them protected at the same time. I mean, I know I'd want to hear from my kids if they were in danger," Reed said.
Grand Rapids Public Schools' policy allows students to use their cell phones before and after school, as well as at lunch. However, in the classroom, all electronic devices must be powered off and securely stored. Parents who need to reach their student during the school day can contact the school's main office.
"I think it's a good thing if you do have to get in touch with your students, just call the school," Hassen said.
Reed acknowledged that navigating the policy will require cooperation from everyone involved.
"You have to all work together, but everybody has different opinions," Reed said.
