Grand Rapids elementary school implements lockdown after armed man appears on campus

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A local elementary school implemented a lockdown today after a report of an armed man on campus.

At 11:28 a.m., police received the report of the subject at Grand Rapids Christian Elementary School-Evergreen Campus, at 1630 Griggs St SE, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department this afternoon.

A staff member reported that an individual with a handgun was hiding behind a trash dumpster.

Officers were on scene "within one minute."

GRPD said the subject was not located, and he was last seen northbound on Sylvan from Griggs.

"There was no active threat," GRPD said.

However, the school went into full lockdown, and police did not say if the lockdown was lifted.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic school was also notified, while Ottawa Hills High School was not in session.

Police said the subject is a Black male in his late teens/early 20s, 5’10” and with an average build.

He was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and headphones around his neck.
