GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A key expressway in West Michigan was shut down for hours after a deadly crash on Monday morning.

Westbound I-96 closed around noon at Leonard Avenue, just after the split with I-196 in Grand Rapids. Michigan State Police troopers were investigating a fatal crash on the freeway near the 3 Mile Road overpass.

The expressway was closed until roughly 3 p.m.

The vehicle appeared to have clipped the trailer of a semi truck, losing control before going off the road, according to Michigan State Police. The car hit the bridge, killing the driver.

Investigators believe speed could have been a factor.
