BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A 1-year-old girl was killed and three other people were injured when a vehicle drove into a group of people Thursday night in Battle Creek.

The group of four were crossing Capital Avenue at East Burnham Street just before 6:30 p.m. on August 20 when the light turned green and a car accellerated into the crosswalk, striking the pedestrians, according to initial details provided by the Battle Creek Police Department.

Witnesses told officers traffic on Capital Avenue had a red light when the group started crossing the street, but when the people were about halfway across, the lights changed. The four people tried to hurry across the rest of the distance when a vehicle headed north moved into the intersection and hit them.

The 1-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. The only adult, a 30-year-old woman, was listed in critical condition as of Friday afternoon. The other two pedestrians, 9-year-old and 5-year-old girls, were also injured, but are expected to survive, said police.

All four victims live in Battle Creek, according to investigators.

The driver of the vehicle, a 54-year-old Battle Creek resident, stopped at the scene and cooperated with detectives. Investigators noted the driver voluntarily submitted to a blood draw.

Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash, according to the police department.
