LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer clarified on Wednesday mask requirements for organized sports during training, practice and competition.

Masks need to be worn at all times when an athlete can’t maintain at least six feet of distance, “except for occasional and fleeting moments,” according to Whitmer’s order.

Swimmers will not be required to wear masks.

Athletes competing in football, soccer or volleyball, for example, aren’t able to maintain distance and will need to wear masks.

“The COVID-19 virus is easily spread through airborne particles and can affect everyone differently,” Whitmer said. “By wearing a face covering when proper distancing is not possible, athletes are better protected from contracting the virus and spreading it to family members, frontline workers and vulnerable populations.”
