54,679 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 54,679.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 314 from yesterday, when there were 54,365 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 452 new cases.

The state says there have been 5,228 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 5 from yesterday, when there were 5,223 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 65 new deaths.

Statewide, 33,168 people have recovered from the virus as of May 22. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,632,721 cases, and there have been 97,430 deaths — while 361,239 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
