COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- Two cars sat, stranded in water up to their grilles on North Park Street under US-131 for several hours Thursday morning, while semis came and went at will at the Pitsch Company facility nearby.

The scene was repeated a various locations around West Michigan: Plainfield Avenue was closed south of 4 Mile Road for a short time during the morning commute at a low spot that tends to flood with heavy rains. But the water drained after a short time. And there were some streets with water problems in Walker, according to Kent County Dispatch.

An number of crashes backed up traffic on the expressways, notably northbound US-131, which was stop-and-go from 54th Street nearly to the S-Curve, and westbound I-96, which struggled from south of 28th Street to the East Beltline.

All crashes were cleared by 9 a.m. and most water drained by midday.
