GALESBURG, Mich. — A crash involving a semi around 7:30 a.m. Thursday on eastbound I-94 kept that side of the expressway closed hours later. There was no word on the condition of the driver.
Crews at the scene after 11 a.m. told FOX 17 there was contamination, which explained the presence of hazmat crews.
Crews were also transferring the load from the wrecked semi’s trailer to other trucks.
At first, only the right lane was blocked, but around 8 a.m. the eastbound lanes were closed entirely. Traffic was routed off at Sprinkle Road, creating long backups on eastbound E. N Avenue and northbound on 35th Street returning to I-94.
The westbound lanes were slowed by a gawker delay that lasted most of the morning, too.
MDOT says that Michigan State Police expect to open the highway around 3:00pm.
