PORTLAND, Mich. -- The City of Portland held their first commission meeting Monday since a tornado caused serious damage to the town last month.

The EF1 tornado damaged several buildings in town on June 22.

Monday, Governor Snyder declared Ionia County a disaster, so the area is now eligible for relief funds.  The county has been in a State of Emergency since the tornado struck.  Efforts Monday night began the administrative process for receiving the state funding.

Officials aren't yet sure how much in funding could be coming to Ionia County.  The funding is meant to recoup tax dollars lost during the initial cleanup for things like overtime pay and contractual services.

The city also said they plan to aggressively pursue federal reimbursement through FEMA.
