EAST LANSING — Wayland hit 3 home runs and beat Frankenmuth, 11-0, to win the division 2 softball state championship Saturday at Michigan State’s Secchia Stadium.
Sophomore catcher Leigha Morse went deep twice and Bethany Teunissen also homered. Morgan Teunissen, Mallory Teunissen and Hailey Houck all added 2 hits.
Mallory Teunissen pitched a complete game allowing 4 hits, walking 3 and striking out 17.
“I said before both the semifinal and final lets score first and what did we do, we do that, and it just makes the stress level for everybody makes us have more fun, I just love that we were able to do that for both of these tough games” Mallory Teunissen said.
It was an emotional win for the team just 2 days after the sudden passing of Bill Merchant, the father of assistant coach Nicki Cardosa.
“I’m so glad we got to do it for the Merchant’s and the Cardosa’s, their family with the tough loss and I am just so happy that all of us seniors got to get that win for our senior year” Mallory added.
