EAST LANSING — Brett Oliver delivered the game-winning hit for Hartland in the bottom 10th inning as the Eagles beat Portage Northern, 2-1, in the division 1 baseball state championship game Saturday at Michigan State’s McLane Stadium.
Hartland got an RBI double from starting pitcher John Baker in the 1st inning as that was it against Huskie starter Tommy Henry. Henry struck out 8 in 8 innings of work, he uncharacteristically walked 6 in the game. Max Shuemann pitched the 9th before allowing the game-winning run in the 10th.
Northern tied the game in the 6th inning on an RBI single from Brady Young who advanced all the way to 3rd on a throwing error. The very next pitch bounced away from the catcher and Young attempted to score but was called out on a very close play.
Portage Northern finishes the season at 30-8.
