LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Traffic is expected to be backed up again on I-96 in eastern Kent County all weekend.
The lane closures in both eastbound and westbound lanes will stretch from about a mile west of the M-50 Alden Nash Avenue exit to the Ionia County line. Previous weekends that had lane closures in this location saw stop-and-go traffic and long delays.
To keep from getting hung up in a traffic jam, the Michigan Department of Transportation recommends a number of detour options:
- Eastbound and westbound: use Cascade Road/Grand River Avenue between 28th Street and Nash Highway
- Eastbound: Use M-21 through Lowell to Ionia, then M-66 south to I-96
- Westbound: Exit at M-66, east on Grand River Avenue/Cascade Road to 28th Street to I-96
In a reprise of lane closures from weekends past, M-37 Broadmoor Avenue will have lane closures northbound and southbound between 44th Street and 60th Street until 5 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 24).
