EAST LANSING, Mich (June 13, 2014) — Decatur junior Cody Huston allowed just 1 hit in 8 innings on the mound and drove in the game-winning run as the Raiders beat Gladstone 2-1 and advanced to the division 3 state championship game.
Huston walked 2, struck out 5 and took a shutout into the 7th inning. Gladstone was able to extend the game without the benefit of hit, as Christian Groleau walked, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a throwing error and scored on a ground out by Sam Pouliot to send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 8th, Raider leadoff hitter Carter Smith singled, went to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt, after and out and an intentional walk to Matthew Botti, Huston delivered the game-winning double over the left fielders head.
Decatur (24-6) scored the 1st run of the game in the 5th on an RBI double from Joby Kawaski.
The Raiders will play either Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett or Reese in Saturday’s championship game at 5 PM.
