EAST LANSING, Mich (June 12, 2014) — Battle Creek Lakeview loaded the bases in the top of the 7th inning, but a fly out ended the threat as Grosse Pointe South held on for 6-4 win over the Spartans Thursday at Michigan State University’s Kobs Field.
Lakeview took an early lead when starting pitcher Jake Herbers drove in a run with a double in the top of the 1st inning. It stayed 1-0 until Grosse Pointe South scored 5 off Herbers in the bottom of the 4th inning.
The Spartans got 3 back in the 5th highlighted by a 2-run double from Nick Jones, but the Blue Devils added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th.
Herbers, Gavin Smith and Russell Mathiak all had 2 hits for Lakeview.
Herbers pitched a complete game allowing 9 hits, 3 earned runs, he walked 2 and struck out 6.
The Spartans finish the season at 32-6, Grosse Pointe South (27-17) will play either Bay City Western or Clarkston in Saturday’s state championship game.
