GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (May 6, 2014) — An inmate at the Kent County Jail was found dead Monday night.

Ryan Maddox, 28, died around 8:11 p.m., but the official cause of death is pending results of an autopsy.

This is the third death at the Kent County Jail since March 2014.

The most recent charges against Maddox included felony assault from an arrest in December 2013. His criminal record goes back to 2006 and included drunk driving, vehicle theft, and assault.

The following news release was sent to FOX 17 from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department:

On Monday, May 5, 2014, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation into
the death of Ryan Scott Maddox, W/M, DOB: 1/16/1986, an inmate that was being
housed at the Kent County Correctional Facility. A Corrections Officer found him
unresponsive (no pulse and not breathing) in his cell at approximately 7:49 PM while
conducting a routine well fare check of the inmates.

Additional correctional officers were radioed to assist with resuscitative efforts along with in-house medical staff, the
Grand Rapids Fire Department, and Life Ambulance. Life saving efforts were
unsuccessful.

The inmate was housed alone and had been incarcerated since November 2013 while
awaiting trial for Assault by Strangulation or Suffocation. An autopsy was conducted
this morning and it was ruled a suicide via asphyxiation.
