ALLENDALE, Mich (May 3, 2014) — The Grand Valley State baseball won the outright GLIAC regular season title with a dramtic win in the opening game of a doubleheader against visiting Malone.
Designated hitter Jesse Abel doubled in 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to give the Lakers a walk-off, 4-3, win. GVSU entered the bottom of the 7th trailing 3-1, Jamie Potts led off with a double, Kevin Zak singled and Giancarlo Brugnoni was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Aaron Overbeck walked to score Potts and make the score 3-2 before Abel delivered the game-winner.
Chris Ripple (1-1) got the final out in the top of the 7th to pick up the win in relief, Aaren Jensen started and pitched 6 and 2/3 allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 4.
The Lakers got on the board 1st when Taylor Banks singled to score Overbeck in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Malone scored twice in the top of the 4th and added another in the top of the 7th.
GVSU also won the 2nd game, 2-1, improving to 23-6 in the GLIAC and 32-11 overall.
GVSU and Malone will play one more time on Sunday at the GVSU Baseball Field, before the Lakers head to the GLAIC tournament in Xenia, Ohio as the number 1 seed next week.
