BIG RAPIDS, Mich — The Ferris State football team held their annual spring football game Friday at Top Taggart Field, and it was freshman KC Zenner (Rockford) who stole the show.
Zenner made plays all over the field including an interception in the 1st half. “I feel like I proved to myslef that I can play here, I’m going to try and push for playing time, coach says that it is an open competition, I want to be that guy, but if i’m not I will be helping out the starter as much as I can” Zenner said . His play certainly did not go unnoticed by his teammates and coaches. “He just plays so hard and he has such a passion for the game and all of our kids respect that and ultimately it makes us better because the guys that are going to fight hard and play the game the way it is meant to be played, it’s just going to make our team a lot stronger” head coach Tony Annese said.
Zenner is competing at linebacker, he made the switch from defensive during the spring. “I like that your a little closer to the ball, you can make plays a little bit better and you can really help out teammates a lot, set them up in the right position to make a play” Zenner said.
The Gold team defeated the Crimson team 29-24 using a modified scoring system.
The Bulldogs (8-2, 8-3) finished in 2nd place in the GLIAC last season and return a lot of key players especially on offense led by quarterback Jason Vander Laan who was the 3rd leading rusher in the conference in 2013 running for 1607 yards and 21 touchdowns. “Usually teams going into fall say they have to change a little bit before they are ready to go and we just want to play right now we are all excited to get out there especially returning 10 guys on offense, we just want summer to be over with and have fall be here already” Vander Laan said.
Ferris will start the season on the road at McKendree on September 4, they will open GLIAC play the following weekend at Northwood and their home opener will be September 20 against Grand Valley State.
