Monday’s Snow Reaches West Michigan Milestones

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 18, 2014) — As our extreme winter continues, we are reaching more impressive numbers when it comes to snowfall totals around West Michigan.

Both Muskegon and Grand Rapids set daily snowfall records for February 17th on Monday, with 6.2″ at Muskegon and 5.6″ in Grand Rapids.  G.R. then saw another 0.6″ of snow after midnight, bringing the total for the season to 101.1″.

This marks only the 8th season on record where Grand Rapids reached 100″ or more of snowfall.  It will only take another six inches of snow to reach 2nd on the all-time list; the highest snow season on record is 1951-52 at 132.2″.

Meanwhile, Muskegon has now topped 120″ of snow for the winter — for the math-challenged, that’s ten feet of snow!

We continue to get questions about snow totals elsewhere around West Michigan.  G.R. and Muskegon are the only sites in West Michigan that report official snowfall multiple times a day; as a result, these are the first and best numbers that we have access to.  For other locations, it takes a while to gather and add up observations from local observers through the National Weather Service; still, we hope that we’ll have an updated list of unofficial snow amounts for other cities in the next couple of days.

Now that snow has ended for a bit, we’ll focus on the return to more pleasant conditions Tuesday & Wednesday, as well as rain, wind, and chances of storms Thursday. You can find all that and more on the Weather page.
