LAKE MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — Several weeks of below normal temperatures in the midwest have resulted in the most ice coverage in years on the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan. This beautiful picture from Saugatuck was submitted to the FOX 17 Facebook page by Jason Canfield.
This map below shows the extent of ice coverage on Lake Michigan. The area in white is where there is still open water, while the darker colors indicate a greater amount of ice coverage. Most of Green Bay is frozen, and much of the southern end of the lake is over 80% ice-covered. Overall, Lake Michigan is 43% covered in ice.
Here is the extent of ice cover on the other Great Lakes:
- Lake Huron, 68%
- Lake Superior, 71%
- Lake Erie, 95%
- Lake Ontario, 20%
With more cold air expected, these numbers will likely increase.
