GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Drivers on westbound I-96 found themselves routed off the expressway at Cascade Road and forced to take the East Beltline.

The cause was located a few hundred yards east of the East Beltline: a multi-car crash that blocked all four lanes. First responders had to extricate one driver.

Traffic was at a standstill back to 28th Street for most of the morning after the crash took place around 6:50 a.m. Removal of all the vehicles involved took until 9 a.m.

The morning commute was peppered with slide-offs, crashes, and freeway slowdowns. Eastbound I-196 was stopped for a time after a 7 a.m. crash at the Diamond Avenue overpass. That traffic jam affected the ramp from northbound US-131 to eastbound I-196.

Mishaps continued after the morning commute.
