Temps Warm Briefly For Great Skate

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With all of the cold weather the past few weeks it was nice to see a brief reprieve for skaters trying to raise money at Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids for the Griffins Youth Association. If you haven’t gone yet, hurry! The skate-a-thon goes through 10:00 PM Sunday night!

Last year the organization raised about $25,000. While attendance has been steady this year, it may be down just a little from 2013, but we won’t have the final numbers until 34 hours of consecutive skating wraps up. Each and every Griffins player shares the wealth and their time by skating an hour at various times on the ice, as well as various celebrities and media folks. Several of us from FOX 17 were on hand through the last two days to help raise money for the Griffins Youth Foundation. Check out the photo below of me and my daughters…we’ve been going for years and the kids love it!

Temperatures made 30 degrees in many locations on Sunday despite the fact the wind had a bit of a bite to it. At least the Arctic air isn’t arriving until Monday! But don’t use the cold as an excuse, since there are warming tents, hot chocolate, and coffee to keep you warm. There’s also some fantastic items to bid on in the silent auction in the warming tent.

The beautiful night shot attached to this story was taken at Rosa Parks Circle by T.J. Hamilton. Note the fire pits that are also outside around the ice to keep people warm!
