FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A shoplifting suspect was caught Wednesday after unsuccessfully attempting to use tinfoil to throw off electronic security devices at The Lakes Mall.
While investigating a separate shoplifting incident at the mall, the as-yet unidentified woman walked right by police officers, but the security devices still triggered an alarm inside the store. They discovered she had lined her purse with tinfoil.
She was arrested and is currently lodged inside the Muskegon County jail. Possessing a coated bag is a separate crime in addition to the shoplifting charge, according to a release.
As of Wednesday, Fruitport Township Police have responded to 291 shoplifting incidents this year. They expect several more in the coming weeks.
