Northbound I-196 blocked by fatal semi crash.

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. —

Traffic on northbound I-196 had to be routed off the expressway early Wednesday due to a crash involving two semis.

One man, 38, died in the crash, but his identity was being withheld because his family has yet to be notified. He was headed southbound on I-196 when his rig crossed the median and hit a northbound semi. The reason for the mishap has not been officially determined.

The driver and passenger of the northbound rig walked away with minor injuries, said Michigan State Police Sgt. Tom Brower.

The crash at mile 25 closed both lanes, and the highway remained closed for hours. The left lane of southbound I-196 was also closed during investigation and cleanup.

All northbound traffic was diverted off the highway at North Shore Drive exit 22 and, after a trip on Blue Star Highway, re-entered I-196 from 109th Avenue.
