District 9 beats Illinois, Advances to the Big League World Series

WYOMING, Mich — District 9 got a clutch 2-run single from Cody Ritsema and strong pitching from Brad Buurstra and Corey Murphy to beat Illinois 3-1 and advance to the Big League World Series next week in Easley, SC.

Buurstra started the game on the mound and kept his team in a scoreless tie until the bottom of the 4th inning, that’s when Ritsema singled home 2 runs to make it 2-0.  Derrick Lewis added and RBI single in the bottom of the 6th inning to make it 3-0.  Buurstra allowed a walk and RBI double to begin the 7th, that’s when Murphy came in.  After a walk, a strikeout and a bunt, Illinois had the tying runs at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but Murphy struck out the next hitter to wrap up the vctory.

District 9 now advances to Easley for the Big League World Series, the last time District 9 made it to South Carolina was 2011.  Play in the Big League World Series begins Wednesday.
