GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — The Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Press Tour made its way through Grand Rapids on Wednesday afternoon at Houseman Field. Mayweather and Alvarez will square off in Las Vegas on Sept. 14 in a Super Welterweight World Championship fight.
Mayweather, 44-0 as a pro, showed respect for his hometown “I would like to thank the fans because without the fans I wouldn’t be where I’m at today” Mayweather said.
As for his opponent, Alvarez who is 42-0-1 as a pro, he received much support from the fans in Grand Rapids as well. “It’s a very big day, obviously I’m very surprised to see all these fans supporting me here, I am very very gracious and happy about it, it’s a big day it’s and important day” Alvarez said through a translator. Floyd said it was good that Alvarez had so much support today, “I think it’s a great thing, I’m glad he was able to piggy back off of me and get a name and go to that next level, it’s a great thing”.
The boxers faced off, posed for camera’s and talked a big game, but in the end Floyd was just glad to be in his hometown. “It’s work, everyday we’re in a different state, we’re in a different city but once again there is no city like Grand Rapids, Michigan. Floyd even spent some time playing basketball at his alma mater Tuesday night, Ottawa Hills High School.
