06-19-13 Portage meth fire scene Deefield

Officers stand outside house on Deerfield.

PORTAGE, Mich. — The home involved in an early morning fire Wednesday was apparently a meth house with kids living there.

After dealing with the fire on Deerfield Street, which started around 3 a.m. in a bedroom, officials obtained a search warrant and found remnants of meth. After it was discovered that children had been in the home, Child Protection Services were called to assist.

Apparently, there were 10 to 12 people inside the house when the fire broke out. Many of those people scattered.

The case is still under investigation, and no arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 329-4567 or Silent Observer at 343-2100, www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.

Police noted that they had been called to the same address to deal with a barricaded gunman last week.
