DETROT, Mich – Prince Fielder hit a pair of home runs and Alex Avila also homered as the Tigers beat the Yankees 8-3 to win their home opener.
Detorit trailed New York 3-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning when Fielder lined a 3-run homer over the fence in right. Avila’s home run came in the 6th and was a solo shot that put the Tigers ahead 6-3. Fielder hit a 2-run homer in the 7th to secure the win.
Doug Fister worked 5 innings allowing 3 runs all earned to get the win. Drew Smyly came out of the bullpen to throw 4 scorless innings and record his first career save.
The Tigers and Yankees will do it again tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Comerica Park on FOX 17.
