MDOT Puts Its Limited Budget Into Repairs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Only two miles of new road will be built in 2013, according to a list of the year’s projects planned for MDOT’s Grand Region.

The Grand Region includes the West Michigan counties of Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Oceana, Newaygo, Montcalm, Mecosta, and Ionia. MDOT is responsible for all interstates, U.S. highways, and state highways, also known as I, US, and M routes, in Michigan.

Five new bridges are also planned.

Aside from that, MDOT plans on working to maintain and repair roads and bridges and spending $100 million to do it. Another $93 million will be invested in further work on the M-231 proejct in Ottawa County, which includes a bridge over the Grand River south of Nunica and additional work on the I-96 interchanges at 112th Avenue and M-104.

“Applying the right fix at the right time and location is key to keep our roads and bridges in good condition for Michigan travelers,” said MDOT Region Engineer Roger Safford in a statement that accompanied the list.

This year, work will be done on 191 miles of road and 25 bridges:

Kent County

  • US-131: In Grand Rapids, connect the Leonard Street on ramp northbound with the Ann Street off ramp with an additional lane. Finish in October.
  • M-11 (28th Street): In Cascade, rebuild 28th Street from Patterson Avenue to I-96 and resurface 28th Street from Patterson Avenue to Breton Road. Finish in October.
  • I-196: In Grand Rapids, repair the bridges over the Grand River near Market Avenue. April-July.
  • M-11 (28th Street): In Wyoming, reconstruct the intersection at Clyde Park Avenue. June-September.
  • M-44 Connector (Plainfield Avenue): In Grand Rapids, resurface Plainfield Avenue from I-96 northeast to Airway Street just north of 5 Mile Road. June-August.
  • I-196: In Grand Rapids, resurface I-196 from Lane Avenue east to the Grand River. July-September.

Ottawa County

  • M-231: Build two miles of the new M-231, including five new bridges and completing the new interchange with I-96, M-104 and 112th Avenue near Nunica. Repair three other bridges: Apple Drive over I-96, and eastbound and westbound I-96 over M-104/Cleveland Street. February-November.
  • I-196: In Holland and Zeeland, resurface I-196 from the Allegan/Ottawa county line to 64th Avenue, and restore the 96th Avenue bridge over I-196. May-September.
  • I-196: West of Grandville, renovate the 8th Avenue and Kenowa Avenue bridges over I-196. June-September.
  • US-31: Near Spring Lake, epair the Ridge Street and Taft Street bridges over US-31. April-July.

Muskegon County

  • I-96: Near Fruitport, resurface westbound I-96 from US-31 to the bridge over the GTW Railroad. July-August.
  • I-96: In Muskegon, install new freeway lighting at the US-31/I-96 interchange. Finished in July.
  • US-31: Near Muskegon, repair the Shettler Road bridge over US-31. July-October.

Ionia County

  • I-96: Near Portland, finish replacing two I-96 bridges over the Portland Trail with a pedestrian box culvert in Portland. Finish in June.
  • I-96: Near the Saranac Rest Area, repair concrete joints from the Kent/Ionia county line in June-July.

Mecosta County

  • US-131: In Big Rapids, rebuild southbound US-131 from 13 Mile Road to 6 Mile Road. June-October.
  • US-131: South of Morley, restore the northbound and southbound US-131 bridges over the Little Muskegon River. April-July.

Montcalm County

  • M-66: Near Sheridan, resurface M-66 from Condensery Road to the north village limits of Sheridan. June-October.

Oceana County

  • US-31: Near Rothbury, replace the deck on the Winston Road bridge over US-31. April-June/September-October.
  • US-31: Near Shelby, restore the Hayes Road bridge over US-31. September-November.
