CASCADE, Mich. — The reconstruction and repaving of 28th Street is already entering its second phase with the scheduled closure of an I-96 ramp.
The ramp from eastbound I-96 to eastbound 28th Street is scheduled to close Wednesday around 10 p.m. to allow for reconstruction of 28th Street from I-96 to Patterson Avenue. It will remain closed until late June.
In addition, the eastbound lanes of 28th Street will be shifted over to the westbound side of the road from Patterson Avenue to I-96, restricting drivers to just one lane in each direction. Left turn lanes will be maintained at the I-96 ramps, Patterson Avenue, and two locations between Patterson and I-96.
As previously reported, Patterson Avenue will also be restricted to one lane in each direction at 28th Street.
From eastbound I-96, the ramp closure detour recommended by the Michigan Department of Transportation is to exit at the first 28th Street ramp, which normally only channels traffic onto westbound 28th Street.
To avoid the backups expected on 28th Street, use Burton Street or 36th Street.
You can also expect backups on the ramps from I-96 to 28th Street.
