GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Monday morning commute began with scattered problems from Sunday night’s snow and rain.

Neighborhood streets that over the weekend had snow and ice were very slippery with rain falling on the frozen pavement. Country roads, especially unpaved roads, were hazardous.

Many school districts decided their buses should not brave the roads and closed.

Most commuters on major arteries, however, only encountered wet and slushy conditions.

A man rolled his vehicle on 135th Avenue just west of US-131 west of Wayland before 5 a.m. He was trapped in his vehicle for a time but unhurt.

Right about 5 a.m., a crash was reported on westbound I-96 west of Alpine Avenue.

Around 5:10 a.m., a minor crash took place between a semi and a car on southbound US-131 at mile marker 30 north of Schoolcraft. The car ended up in the ditch.

Before 6 a.m., western Ottawa County seemed to be a problem area. Two slide-offs took place on eastbound I-96 between Nunica and Coopersville, while an SUV wound up in the ditch on 120th Avenue south of Quincy Street in Holland Township. A car went into the trees on Lake Michigan Drive east of 144th Avenue.

After 6 a.m., West Michigan’s side roads proved have the trickiest driving. There was even a rollover on 143rd Avenue, a short stretch of road between 56th Street and 58th Street south of Holland.

Scanner traffic cooled after 6:30 a.m. regarding traffic problems.
