Why Are Flags Flying At Half Staff?

Posted

Flags in Michigan will be flying at half staff through December 15 on order of Gov. Rick Snyder.

The most familiar reason for placing flags at half staff is in memory of a fallen Michigan soldier, but this time the governor seeks to honor the memory of a long-time public servant.

Flags are flying at half staff to honor former state Sen. Philip Mastin of Fenton, Mich., who died Nov. 28.

In the governor’s order, Mastin was remembered for serving the public in various offices over 25 years. He was a city councilman in Hazel Park, a supervisor and commissioner in Oakland County, Pontiac city manager, a state representative and a state senator.

Flags in the state are schedule to return to full height on Dec. 16.
