Western Downs Oakland for 6th Straight Victory, Prepare for Trip to Ann Arbor

Western Michigan’s men’s basketball team beat Oakland today, 76-72 in a game that was tight throughout.  The Broncos led by 4 at the half after a back-and-forth first 20 minutes.  The Broncos foud thmselves down 3 in the final minutes until sophomore point guard Austin Richie (Lowell, IN) hit a 3 to tie the game.  Richie also hit the game winner Thursday night in a 54-53 win over High Point.  Two Nate Hutchinson free throws with 1:04 to play gave WMU a lead they would not relinquish. 

Junior center Shayne Whittington (Lawrence) led the Broncos with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks, Hutchinson had 13 and freshman forward Darius Paul (Warren, IL) had 12.  Oakland (2-6) was led by Travis Bader’s 18 points, former Grand Rapids Catholic Central guard Duke Mondy had 17 for the Golden Grizzlies.

Western (6-1) has now won 6 straight after losing their season opener at Cornell.  The Broncos will travel to Ann Arbor Tuesday night to take on 3rd ranked Michigan, the game is set to begin at 8:30 pm on the Big Ten Network.
