(WXYZ) -- With the New Orleans Saints eliminated from the NFL playoffs, the Detroit Lions are now free to conduct an in-person interview with Dan Campbell.

NFL rules prohibit in-person interviews or job offers until a candidate's season ends.

It was reported Friday that Campbell, the Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach had emerged as the favorite to become Detroit's new head coach.

Campbell has been with the Saints since 2016. He spent 2011-15 as Miami Dolphins tight ends coach, serving as interim head coach for 12 games following Joe Philbin's firing in 2015.

Campbell spent the final three years of his playing career with the Lions, following stints with the Cowboys and Giants.
