Niles native injured in Cass County car crash

CASS COUNTY, Mich. — The Cass County Sheriff's office reported to Fox 17 that at about 6 p.m. on Monday night, his office was called to investigate a personal injury crash that occurred on Redfield St. and Fir Rd., Milton Township, Cass County, Michigan.

Shannon Ruth Schalk, a 25-year-old Niles, MI, native, was heading West on Redfield St., when 60-year-old Kimberly Joy Evans of Granger, stopped at the Redfield St and Fir Rd. intersection and proceeded to turn South on Fir Rd. As the driver was turning, a 16-year-old resident of Niles, MI was heading East on Redfield St.,

The 16-year-old driver, who is unidentified at this time, did not stop at the stop sign and crashed into the South turning vehicle. This caused Ms. Schalk’s vehicle to spin and hit another vehicle heading West on Redfield St. Evans was stopped when her vehicle was struck. Schalk suffered minor injuries and was transported to St. Joe Regional Medical Center.

The 16-year-old driver and his passenger were checked out and cleared on scene by SMCAS Ambulance. Evans did not sustain any injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts and airbags for two vehicles were deployed.

Assisting agencies included Edwardsburg Township Fire, Edwardsburg Police, Michigan State Police and SMCAS EMS.
