LANSING, Mich. — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says they are shipping 3 million BinaxNOW tests to the state of Michigan.
The tests are described as “state-of-the-art,” capable of diagnosing COVID-19 infections “in as little as fifteen minutes.”
Per Governor Whitmer’s approval, the tests will be allocated to schools, first responders, nursing homes and anywhere the governor deems necessary, according to the HHS.
“Distributing these rapid tests directly to states,” says Assistant Secretary for Health Admiral Brett Giroir, “is consistent with the Trump Administration’s successful, ongoing approach of testing the right person, with the right test at the right time, is working and the effort will continue until the pandemic is under control.”
Giroir emphasizes that the tests do not preclude the need for masks, social distancing and proper hand washing.
A reported 873,000 BinaxNOW tests have already been shipped, according to health officials.
