GAINES TOWNSHIP/GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Eight people are in custody after a drive-by shooting in Gaines Township Wednesday night.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) says around 50 shots were fired near Campus Park Drive and 60th Street at around 9 p.m.
We’re told one residence was hit in the shooting. No injuries were reported.
Three stolen vehicles were involved in the shooting, deputies say. A fourth was recovered nearby.
Grand Rapids police responded to reports of stolen cars at about 3 a.m. Thursday and learned they matched the descriptions of two vehicles used in the shooting, authorities say.
Deputies tell FOX 17 a perimeter was established after people were discovered inside those vehicles. When law enforcement tried to make contact, both cars rammed into a Grand Rapids police cruiser while trying to flee, according to KCSO.
A vehicular pursuit ensued with one of the two vehicles as the four people inside the other car were reportedly arrested.
The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle collided into a porch near the intersection of Fulton Street and Valley Avenue, the sheriff’s office tells us.
The crash resulted in a car fire, which GRPD says was quickly extinguished. The car couldn't be pulled away from the home until crews could be sure removal wouldn't collapse the porch.
We’re told two suspects ran off while two others inside the vehicle were placed in custody. The two who fled were apprehended following tracking efforts from a K9 unit.
All suspects were treated for minor injuries before they were transported to KCSO custody, according to deputies.
