Police have confirmed an armed suspect who robbed a liquor store that triggered a lockdown at all Ford buildings at the Rouge site in Dearborn has been captured.
Early Thursday, police were looking for an "armed and dangerous" individual at AK Steel in Dearborn, which is located inside the gates at the Rouge site, but is not a Ford facility. Normal operations have resumed at Ford’s Rouge site after the area was locked down for several hours due to a police incident that was unrelated to Ford.
The UAW has issued the following statement about the situation;
At this time, it is our understanding that no shots have been fired and our employees at both AK Steel and Ford in the Rouge Complex are safe and in lockdown. We want to emphasize that this is an active situation that the Dearborn Police are handling. At this point, it appears to not be workplace related. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dearborn Police and all who are on lockdown during this situation.
Police say this stemmed from a liquor store robbery in the 31000 block of Cherry Hill in Garden City at around 9:15 a.m. Thursday. Officers were called to the scene in search of a suspect in the robbery of the Express Liquor store.
The suspect was driving a white and tan Ford F-150. The truck was spotted and officers attempted to stop it. Authorities say a chase ensued and the suspect ditched the vehicle and ran away.
Dearborn police released a statement saying they were searching for the suspect in the area of Schaefer and Butler, near the Ford River Rouge complex, resulting in a shut down of the area.
Ford says normal operations have since resumed at the facility;
Normal operations have resumed at Ford’s Rouge site after the area was locked down for several hours due to a police incident that was unrelated to Ford.
The suspect has been taken into custody and will be handed over to the Garden City Police Department.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garden City Police Department at (734)793-1700.
