Update: The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as Therman Lewis Preston, a 65-year-old man from the Three Rivers area, on Sept. 29. An investigation appears to show he died instantaneously from severe trauma from the crash.

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The body of a motorcycle rider was found in a yard several hours after police believe the crash took place.

Van Buren County Central Dispatch was contacted about the crash at 7:36 a.m. Monday, but investigators believe the crash took place around 11:40 p.m. That’s the time neighbors say they heard a loud noise.

Residents looked around, but darkness and rain interfered with their efforts.

The crash took place on M-40 Porter Highway south of Shaw Road near Cedar Lake.

It’s believed a 65-year-old man from the Three Rivers area was riding at high speed when he went off the road and hit a post and a tree.

Investigators are still looking into the specific cause of the crash, the sheriff’s office reports in a release.
